Whoever corrupts or to corrupt a master in chancery, master, auditor, juror, arbitrator, umpire or referee by giving, offering or promising any gift or gratuity whatever, with intent to influence his opinion or decision, relative to a cause or matter pending in a court, or before an inquest, or for the decision of which he has been chosen or appointed, shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for not more than five years or by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars and imprisonment in jail for not more than one year.
